There are endless number of automakers that are making the shift from the ICE-powerhouse to environmental friendly electric cars. Brands like Toyota has invested millions in alternate fuels, like Hydrogen, and the Toyota Mirai might have a bright future someday. But for now, electric cars is what drives the automotive industry all crazy, but there’s one brand that has other interests too.

Koenigsegg, and its founder, founder Christian von Koenigsegg has showed his interest in electric cars too. But being honest, he has always commented on how they would affect the performance(maybe he should aspire from the Tesla Model S Plaid). Nevertheless, the automaker’s genius founder has his interests piqued by volcanos. Yes, you read that right, Koenigsegg is look forward to powering its cars with volcano power, or somewhat nearby.

The founder explains about the brilliant idea while chit-chatting with Bloomberg, “So there is this technology from Iceland, it was invented there, where they cap the CO2 emittance from semi-active volcanoes and convert that into methanol. And if you take that methanol and you power the plants that do the conversion of other fuels and then power the ship that transports the those fuels to Europe or the U.S. or Asia, wherever it goes, you put the fuel completely CO2-neutral into the vehicle.”

In short, the geothermal sources, which are a rich source of methanol, could fuel the transportation, and this would translate to CO2-neutral fuel entering the Koenigsegg fuel tank. While Christian isn’t the only identity that has been keen about the volcano-power. The owner of the luxury brand Volvo, Geely has invested in carbon-recycling. It’s no too different to Porsche synthetic fuel concept that was claimed to be less harmful that even electricity that powers EVs.

For the brand that has recently unveiled Gemera, an 4-passenger hypercar, volcanos isn’t the weirdest thought. The brand’s founder talked about the heftiness of the electric vehicles. He said, “You have to also realise they’re (ICE supercars) 500 or 600 kilograms lighter,” he said, adding, “So when you turn and when you break and when you drive around a race track, you still get a huge performance difference.”
